This phone call coincided with the announcement that Israel and Hamas had agreed on the initial phase of the peace deal proposed by Trump. Notably, this marks the second conversation between the two leaders within a month, following Trump’s call to Modi on September 16 to wish him a happy 75th birthday.
In his post on X, PM Modi referred to Trump as his ‘friend’ and expressed gratitude for the birthday wishes.
“Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to elevating the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership. We support your efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict,” PM Modi stated.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Indian delegation engaged in ‘constructive meetings’ with US officials regarding various aspects of the trade deal.
“Both sides exchanged views on potential outlines of the agreement and decided to continue discussions aimed at achieving an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement,” the statement added.
Last month, USTR Jamieson Greer characterized India’s approach in trade negotiations as ‘pragmatic’, indicating that both nations are actively working toward a deal.
During a discussion at the Economic Club of New York, Greer elaborated on the ongoing negotiations with India.
“The Indians are being pragmatic. We have actually been having conversations with the Indians from day one of the administration on the trade side of the ledger. So, when you talk about a 50% tariff on India, half of that 25% is really the trade-related. It’s the reciprocal tariff. It’s where we’re trying to negotiate a deal,” he explained.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in September.
Following their discussions, Rubio emphasized India’s ‘critical’ importance to the US and welcomed the ongoing trade dialogues.
